In December 2013, plans by Sony Pictures Entertainment to start their own expanded film universe based on their licensed Marvel Comics properties were put ahead, including a film based on the Sinister Six, a six-member group part of Spider-Man's rogue gallery, with Drew Goddard attached to write and potentially direct.[1] Goddard was confirmed to be attached as the film's director in April 2014.[2] By November 2015, the film was believed to have been canceled when Sony cancelled Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man film franchise and focused in a new reboot part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[3] However, in October 2018, Goddard reflected that his script could be used for a film eventually.[4] By December of that year, Amy Pascal said that the film was "alive" again following the success of Venom, and that she was waiting for Goddard to be ready to direct.[5]
In December 2024 Kraven the Hunter was revealed to be the final film in the SSU.
