The Search for the Codex was an attempt by Knull to capture Venom, with sending the Xenophages to Earth, suggesting the symbiote's codex is the key that could free him.

Many billions of years ago BC, Knull created the symbiotes to relieve his loneliness,[2] however he is imprisoned by the symbiotes and locked in Klyntar. Knull then has spent most of his life searching for a key that could free him.[1]

In 2019, when Eddie Brock died and the Venom symbiote revived him during the Riot symbiote's invasion attempt of Earth,[3] the symbiote has a codex in which Knull could escape from the prison. In 2021, sometime later after learning of the symbiote's codex, he sends the Xenophages to Earth, to find and capture the symbiote's codex.[1]
