- "There are more of us... millions more. They will follow wherever I lead."
"Where we lead."
"Yes, we. But first we must retrieve them."
"I can take care of that." - āRiot and Carlton Drake[src]
Riot was one of the four symbiotes taken from Klyntar by the Life Foundation. Known on its home planet for its deadly abilities and power to create a large arsenal of weapons, Riot was the only one to escape the Life Foundation's clutches, crashing the rocket which carried them in Malaysia and being quick to abandon his counterparts, intending to carry out their mission to feed on the planet on his own terms. Jumping from host to host over the next six months, Riot eventually tracked down and bonded with Life Foundation CEO Carlton Drake, seeing him as a like-minded individual who could help to carry out the mission through his access to the Foundation's resources. However, Riot and Drake host were ultimately thwarted and killed by fellow symbiote Venom and the latter's host, Eddie Brock, who destroyed the rocket the pair intended to use to bring more Symbiotes to take over Earth, incinerating them in the resulting explosion.
Biography[]
Creation[]
Imprisonment of Knull[]
Billions of years ago BC, Riot and his siblings, Venom and Toxin were created by Knull alongside the rest of the Symbiotes when the former wished to ease his loneliness.[1][2][3]
Knull acted as a tyrannical king over Riot and the other symbiotes during his reign of darkness. Then, the universe of light emerged. Knull wanted to use the Symbiotes to help him destroy all life and light, however Riot and the others finally rebelled againts Knull and imprisoned him along with his sword.[1]
Arrival on Earth[]
LF1 Crash[]
Riot led several other symbiotes on a quest to invade planets by finding ideal hosts and devouring their populations while escaping from Knull.[1] Riot was one of the four symbiotes that the Life Foundation collected from an asteroid that was near planet Earth. Though the spaceship of their collectors ended up crash landing in Malaysia and most of the other astronauts were killed, Riot managed to escape from his containment and bonded to John Jameson's body without anyone knowing.[4]
Searching for a Host[]
Jameson's body was discovered by the EMT paramedic Corinne Wan to be the only survivor, the paramedics got him in a stretcher and put him in an ambulance to take him to the hospital, with Corinne checking him whereas the driver drove the way to the hospital. While Corinne was distracted, Riot attacked her and the driver, causing the ambulance to crash. Riot transferred himself into Corinne and as she walked, the symbiote healed her injuries.
They found a market in a village, where Corinne found a live fish, grabbing it and taking a bite. When the stall owner complained, Riot shot spikes out, killing everyone around them but one older woman, to whom the symbiote transferred into the old woman's body, leaving Corinne to die. Six months later, when Suzy and her mother arrived in the United States, the Riot symbiote had passed into her and instead of entering the taxi, she made her way to the Life Foundation.[4]
Finding Carlton Drake[]
Interrogating Eddie Brock[]
- "WHERE IS HE?! WHERE'S VENOM?!"
- āRiot to Eddie Brock[src]
Once at the Life Foundation Headquarters, Riot approached Carlton Drake as Suzy. Drake asked Suzy if she was lost, to which she replied she wasn't and possessed Carlton, asking for his help in bringing more of its kind to Earth, something to which Carlton agreed as it corresponded with his own desire to harvest more symbiotes from the comet. After Roland Treece kidnapped Eddie Brock and took him into the Life Foundation's facility, Carlton arrived and told him and his mercenaries to get out.
Drake asked where Venom was but Eddie responded that he didn't know and even if he knew he wouldn't tell him. Drake then changed into Riot in order to intimidate him but couldn't get any answers and finally asked Treece to execute him in the woods. Later Carlton had a talk with Riot, apologizing for the loss of the other symbiotes, but Riot said it didn't matter as they planned to launch another space shuttle in order to recover more symbiotes from the comet.[4]
Battle at the Life Foundation[]
Inside of a space shuttle launch, when his launch crew refused to obey his orders, Drake transformed into Riot and killed all of them, engaging in the shuttle's ignition. Riot jumped out of the window to get inside the rocket, only to be blocked by Venom. Riot greeted Venom and told him to get into the rocket, to which Venom refused and he did not like the idea of the Symbiotes invading the planet, saying that "they wouldn't have the world destroyed by him", to which Riot angrily declared that he will kill Venom for this.
The two symbiotes and their hosts started to fight to the death, with Riot ripping Venom off of Brock, after which Brock then re-bonded with Venom. As the symbiotes and their hosts fused and were reaching inside the space shuttle, Anne Weying used the shuttle to extract the symbiotes from them. Separated from Riot by Weying, Drake and Brock brawled on the launch platform before Brock managed to catch Drake monologuing and knocked him off, but Riot re-bonded with Drake and they impaled Brock through the chest, leaving him for dead. Riot then boarded the rocket as it started to lift off and head into space, but the Venom symbiote found Brock and bonded to him, saving him and healing the impalement wound. Venom then took out Riot's arm-blade and then leaped onto the rocket.
Finally, inside of the rocket, Riot realized that Brock was not dead because Venom had a bond with him just in time, as Riot angrily called him a 'traitor", but Venom mockingly told Riot to "have a nice life", as Venom fell and used Riot's tendril-blade (which was pulled out after Venom saved Brock) to puncture the rocket's fuel-tanks and fuel line, cutting it open, and causing the rocket's liquid fuel to spill out, which in turn contacted the burning (and superheated) engines and its exhaust plume, and causing the fuel to ignite, and the rocket's fuel tanks to explode and its hull to rupture from the ignited fuel, turning it into a massive fireball, the ensuing explosion killing Riot and Drake in the process as they were both incinerated in the explosion.[4]
Legacy[]
This section needs a rewrite |
Despite being killed, the battle the symbiote had with Venom and Eddie Brock would be mentioned later by Patrick Mulligan after he briefly arrested Brock.[5] Afterwards, Riot's actions inadvertently caused a Codex to be created with Eddie and Venom thus alerting Knull to send the Xenophages to Earth and hunt them down.
Personality[]
- "You are nothing."
- āRiot to Eddie Brock[src]
Riot as a symbiote shares characteristics with his ideal host, Carlton Drake; as they both believe they are above everyone else, which makes them the perfect symbiotic match. Riot has a commanding presence and is willing to do anything to achieve his goals (which failed as he was burned alive by the combusted leaked fuel of their rocket). Paired with a similar host, the symbiote is ruthless, crazy, murderous, and vengeful. Riot is not a team player, and does not care much about the fate of his teammates.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Symbiotic Physiology: Riot is an amorphous, extraterrestrial being of grey/silver biomass. By achieving symbiosis, the Riot symbiote can afford its host several superhuman attributes, all of which are at their peak when the symbiote envelopes the host in a sentient suit composed of the symbiote's biomass. Symbiosis will afford the host superhuman levels of strength, durability, speed, agility and healing. According to Venom, Riot excels in all the departments and seems to be one of the strongest symbiotes.
- Possession: Riot has the ability to phase into its host's flesh, making it seem intangible while bonding with them. This connection significantly enhances the host's physical abilities to inhuman levels, allowing them to easily overpower other humans and heal severe injuries, such as broken bones and damaged tissue, within seconds. Riot can also suppress the host's consciousness to exert complete control, especially if the host resists or proves incompatible. In the case of more willing and compatible hosts, such as Drake, Riot and the host can nearly meld their minds while sharing the same body, resulting in a powerful synergy that grants the host superhuman abilities provided by the symbiote. In contrast, individuals like John Jameson, Corinne Wan, and Suzy were deemed incompatible, leading to Riot exerting total control over them, as they could not effectively harness its powers.
- Superhuman Strength: Riot can give the host tremendous superhuman strength; enabling the host to lift and exert far greater physical force. The Riot symbiote is able to exert sufficient force to break solid rocks and smash through obstacles such as machinery at will. Riot's strength was even able to rip the host from its symbiote with no effort.
- Superhuman Agility: Those who are bonded to the Riot symbiote are extremely agile; their natural speed and agility enhanced to superhuman level, allowing them to quickly scale vertical surfaces, leap tremendous heights and distances, as well as being able to move on all fours with ease.
- Superhuman Durability: Owing to Riot's absolute control over its mass and that of host it bonded with, the symbiote can enhance its durability to the point of immune to bullets and sharp weapons. This allowed it to survive the crash of an ambulance while being bonded to Corinne Wan and even barely injured while escaping from the LF1 Crash.
- Superhuman Speed: The Riot symbiote can move at considerable superhuman speeds, allowing them to move several feet per second, swiftly scale buildings, attack with more precision and brutality and move quickly on all fours.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: Though both it and its host can be injured, Riot symbiote can heal both it and its host at accelerated rate, as demonsteated when it healed Corinne Wan's body after her ambulance crashed.
- Shapeshifting: Riot's aforementioned full control over its mass also allows the symbiote to form constructs and appendages from its very being such as spikes and other various sharp objects, a feature its most compatible host (Drake) can exploit in combat.
- Symbiotic Suit Manifestation: As with other symbiotes, Riot symbiote has the basic ability to fully emerge from its host Drake while still attached to him, enveloping its host's body to form its own as a sentient, malleable but durable suit complete with eyes, claws and a mouth with powerful jaws and sharp teeth while increases in mass, turning him into powerful opponent.
- Construct Creation: Riot can create various weapons as extensions of his body, including bladed armaments such as swords, knives, lances, axes, claws and even a wrecking ball with spikes.
- Symbiote consumption: Riot has the ability to absorb any symbiotes, along its host, to bodily achieve much more powerful strength as he was able to absorb Venom and Brock into himself.
Abilities[]
- "Riot is what you would call a team leader. He has an arsenal of weapons. He is unstoppable."
- āVenom to Eddie Brock[src]
- Leadership: According to Venom, Riot is a team leader and has a commanding presence on their home planet.
Weaknesses[]
- Sonic Vibrations: As powerful as Riot is, he is vulnerable to extremely loud noise and even that of intense sonic vibrations as it drives the symbiote crazy.
- Intense Heat: Aside from the intense noise that causes Riot to go crazy, he can also be injured through exposure to intense heat, such as from lasers, fire, etc. This was only shown after Venom punctured the fuel tank of their rocket (which in turn contacted the burning engines), it caused the rocket to completely explode and rupture from the leaked fuel, as Riot was screaming in agonizing pain as the flames from the leaked fuel burn him alive.

Trivia[]
- In the comics, Riot was one of five Symbiotes that were forcefully spawned out of Venom. Its first host was Trevor Cole, a mercenary hired by Carlton Drake's Life Foundation.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Paolo Giandoso provided the concept art for the DNEG design team, helping in the design of both Venom and Riot with a sequence of 158 drawings for the film's final battle between the two characters.[6]
- Because Riot is a minor character from the comics, the designers had more freedom to develop his film appearance.[7]
