Knull is a primordial and elder deity known as the King in Black. He is the creator of the Symbiotes and the Xenophages, however he got locked away by his creations, and has spent most of his life searching for a key that could free him.[3] After one of his Symbiotes, Venom became a fugitive, he sent the Xenophages to find and capture the symbiote, knowing that he is the key to free him. However, the Xenophages failed, and Knull vowed that he would kill Venom's world once he escaped his eternal prison.
Biography[]
Creating the Symbiotes[]
Billions of years ago BC, Knull created the Symbiotes and the Xenophages to relieve his loneliness.[1][4]
Imprisoned by Symbiotes[]
- "Long ago, when light invaded my kingdom, my symbiote children betrayed me and imprisoned me here."
- āKnull[src]
Knull acted as a tyrannical king over them under his reign of darkness. Then, the universe of light emerged, spreading its brightness through his once-pure black domain. In response, Knull used the Symbiotes to help him destroy all life and light. However, he was betrayed by his creations and ended up eternally imprisoned along with his sword.[1]
Hunting for Escape[]
Billions years later, in 2019, a Codex was created when the symbiote, Venom, resurrected its host, Eddie Brock, during his battle against Riot, something Knull learned of and saw as his chance of escape.[1]
Sending the Xenophages[]
- "I order you to search the corner of the universe, until you find this key. Find me, the codex. And when I escape, and annihilate every living planet and destroy my symbiote offspring, I will reward you.... with your lives..."
- āKnull to the Xenophages[src]
Desperate to gain freedom, Knull ordered his remaining subordinates, the Xenophages, to travel across the universe in search of the Codex, stating that once he managed to escape, he would go on a rampage on every living planet, as well as take revenge on his Symbiotes, promising the Xenophages to let them live in his new realm, an order his creations complied with and ended up traveling to Earth, where they came into conflict with Venom and Edward Brock. During the attack on Area 51, Knull watched and suffered as the Xenophages were killed by Venom, who sacrificed himself to destroy them, ending up with the Codex, ruining Knull's escape. [1]
Swearing Revenge[]
Following the failure of the Xenophages and the destruction of the Codex, Knull declared that Venom, considering him the champion and protector of Earth, had fallen, and Knull would one day be able to escape and annihilate all planets, declaring that the "King in Black" has finally awakened, vowing that Earth will be the first planet he would destroy, and that he will burn all of humanity.[5]
