The Escape from San Quentin State Prison was a successful escape attempt by Cletus Kasady, who managed to survived the death penalty by lethal injection after bonding himself with the newborn Carnage Symbiote.

When Cletus Kasady was just put on death row, he talked to reporter Eddie Brock, who was the host of the Venom symbiote, at San Quentin State Prison and after tauting him a little, Venom attacked him, prompting Cletus to bite Eddie, but instead of getting blood, the serial killer got an offspring of Venom, that would later be known as Carnage.[1]

Cletus Kasady becomes Carnage
Come his execution by lethal injection, Cletus said his last words and told the family of his victims to enjoy the show. Just as Kasady was being injected, the Carnage symbiote became sentient and began manifesting itself from inside Kasady's body, covering the serial killer as he began to convulse in his gurney, breaking free of his restraints as the prison guard and the Warden looked on in horror. One of the guards pulled a gun and tried to shoot Kasady down, but the symbiote stopped him and destroyed Cletus' execution chamber as all witnesses ran away.

Now achieving complete symbiosis, Cletus and Carnage tried to eat the Warden, but were briefly stopped by an alarm that they soon destroyed. Walking around the prison, Carnage began killing all prison guards that tried to attack them and destroyed many of the cells while prisoners either ran away in fear or chanted him on. Finally spinning around to create a vortex, Carnage grabbed the Warden as Kasady asked him for his last words before eating him. Carnage then broke out of the prison's walls, leaving Kasady as a free man once again.[1]

After stealing a car and communicating with his symbiote, Kasady and Carnage went to a gas station, where they killed a man and hacked a laptop to find the location of Kasady's lover, Frances Barrison. Realizing that she was transferred to Ravencroft, they traveled there to rescue her. Meanwhile, the authorities began a manhunt for Cletus after the miraculous events of his escape were discovered.[1]
