Andy Serkis said that Shriek has spent 25 years at Ravencroft by the time the main events of the film begin, which are firmly placed in October-November 2020 (see 2020 references). This would ideally suggest that the prologue is in late 1995; however, with the film showing that it is in 1996, this is impossible. To get the prologue as close as possible to the ideal late 1995 placement, it can be placed in January 1996.
